The specimens distributed are labelled C. affinis rather than C.
canaHculatus J. Ag., because the cystocarps project upon both surfaces
of^|Ppond. There are certainly forms of Chondrus upon the Cali-
fornia coast of whioh this is not true, and there seems to be some prob-
ability that there are two species of Chondrus represented.
