Whitehead, 24 JUL 1978, FPNW FREMONT CO. Site 132. Brush community between U.S. Highway 191 and the Snake River just south of the Osborne Bridge; Elevation 1950m. Widespread in open woods, meadows, and brush communities. T11N R42ES1 NW 1/4///44.3169° N-111.45268° W [WGS84] ± 500 m. <estimate from BioGeomancer> The nonrhizomatous versus rhizomatous distinction between P. palustris and P. pratensis can be confusing. I have found that, for my area at least, the character of inflorescence size is often, though not always, more clearly marked. The inflorescence of P. palustris is generally about 17 cm, the shortest measurement I have made being 14.5 cm. By contrast, P. pratensis averages about 8 cm, the longest measurement being 13 cm. Voucher: Whitehead, G.S. 1983. M.S., Idaho State U. Associated with Pinus contorta, Primus virginiana, Sorbus scopulina, and P. nervosa; or with Iliamna rivularis, Tragopogon dubius, and Bromus inermis; or with Artemisia tridentata, Agropyron dasystachyum, Eriogonum umbellatum, and Festuca idahoensis.
