I The types of Scirpus fernaldii Bicknell
from Maine (GH, NY), S.F. Blake 5584 (CAS)
from New Brunswick, and a very few other
specimens from the northern Atlantic Coast
are like many specimens from Europe in
their trifid (or some bifid) styles,
compressed-trigonous (to lenticular)
achenes, and relatively small spikelets.
Their morphology is consistent with either
their introduction from Europe or their
production by hybridization with B.
fluviatilis or possibly B. robus tus.
