A short slope in a deciduous forest occurs south of 118th Avenue (a dirt road)
and north of a sunken former railroad bed. This site is on the Southern Iowa
Drift Plain.
200+ plants are in bud, bloom (the stamens have white filaments) or have fruits
on the slope. Plants occur as individuals or in small groups. The collection site
is at the base of the slope and north/northeast-facing (dominated by Ulmus
rubra [most less than 6 inches in diameter] and Celtis occidentalism. The plants
are found on both sides of the Shimek State Forest boundary fence. Hydrastis
canadensis is associated with Caulophyllum thalictroides. Hvdrophvllum
virainianum. Parthenocissus quinauefolia. Phlox divaricata. Prunus virginiana
and Rosa multiflora.
