Yancey County: unpaved road ca. 0.8 km (0.5
mile) S of the town of Huntdale and the Noli-
chucky River. Elevation ca. 680 m. Steep,
mowed, roadside bank in mixed forest of Tsuga,
Acer, Fagus, Tilia, Liriodendron and Betula.
Growing in dense, few- to many-stemmed clumps
in rocky, loam soil. Flowers white; roots
with odor of wintergreen.
