Growing in a shrubby thicket in loamy soil over soft shale (Montevallo-Nauvoo association, steep; loamy-skeletal, mixed, subactive, thermic, shallow Typic Dystrudepts to fine-loamy, siliceous, semiactive, thermic Typic Hapludults). Growing with Amelanchier arbórea, Andropogon virginicus, Chasmanthium sessiliflorum, Comus florida, Dichanthelium sphaerocarpon, Dichanthelium sp., Gelsemium sempervirens, Hypericum hypericoides, Lespedeza hirta, Lonicera japónica, Pinus taeda, P. virginiana, Quercus falcata, Q. hemisphaerica, Q. nigra, Solidago arguta, Toxicodendron radicans, Ulmus alata, Vaccinium arboreum, V. pallidum Sc Vitis rotundifolia.
