Notes (shown on label)
"This moss is said to be seldom collected, yet I seldom go out in this section without seeing some of it. The place where I collected this lot is in an old woods with many trees virgin forest. In this place it is next to the most common moss. Leucodon brachypus is the most common. The trees were cut down recently in lumber operations and the tree tops have not been cut up. This leaves the most favorable habitats of Entodon brevisetus in reach of the collector. The only places that I have found it growing are on top of a horizontal or near horizontal surface. On standing trees it grows on the top of large limbs that come out horizontally from the tree. An oak then leans, or stands at an angle of 45 degrees is a good place to look for this moss. When an old oak falls that has some of this moss on it on the top side it seems to thrive unusually well. I have twice found this moss growing on rocks. Some say that this moss seems to prefer a limestone region. This has not been my experience. The stone that I found it growing on was not limestone and I have only once found it in limestone region. I have found it on mt. nearly 2000 feet above the limestone strata. The fact that it is found on the bark of oak trees that have tannic acid seems to show that they like acid. This moss fruits quite freely but this year has been so extremely dry that very few mosses have fruited." - Rev. F. W. Gray in scheda.
