571/41, from Hicks Nursery, Long
Island, plant record 5/28/41.
Shrubs to 5 m. tall; there are 9 stems in a
loose clump 5 m. in diameter, forming a
continuous umbrella-like canopy, the	I *
central stems erect, some on the perifery of
the clump are leaning; the largest stem 18 cm.
in diameter, and also with year-old sprouts from
the ground, the stems mostly decumbent at the base to 1 m. long;
bark smooth with lenticels. Fruit green with reddish tan hairs, 1-5
per inflorescence.
/ 53510a 15 Oct. 2005 Fruit from ground, opening irregularly from
I the top. Seeds 1 (rarely 2) per fruit, light chestnut-colored or pale
cream. \
This clump was removed in late winter, 2006, after the adjacent
Pinus strobus tree was taken down during a fierce wind storm.
Some year-old sprouts and later sprouts from spring of 2006 were
left to continue the colony.
