CAPRIFOLIACEAE Sambucus canadensis L.
Clump of shrubs 3 m. tall, with much die-back of
branches every year; pith white. Leaflets with edges
curled upwards, impossible to press them all flat.
Inflorescences, at least the individual main branches,
conspicuously flat-topped in bud and early flower,
becoming somewhat rounded in later bloom. Flowers
fragrant, but somewhat unpleasantly so, pure white
except for yellow anthers.
Unshaded brushy fencerow with Zanthoxylum americanum,
Carya ovata, dead Ulmus americana, Urtica dioica, Prunus
serotina, in bottom of small valley.
WISCONSIN: Richland Co., 3 miles SE of Richland Center.
