CAPRIFOLIACEAE Sambucus canadensis L.
Clump of shrubs 3 m. tall, with much die-back of
branches every year; pith white. Leaflets with edges
curled upwards, impossible to press them all flat.
A few inflorescences still in bloom, about half with green
fruit and the other half with ripe fruit. Inflorescence
branches red-purple. Fruit dark purple, almost black,
shiny, with dark red-purple juice, the juice turning
blue in (calcareous) tap water, reddish in vinegar, blue
in ammonia. Fruit edible, but somewhat bitter when
eaten in quantity.
Unshaded brushy fencerow with Zanthoxylum americanum.
Carya ovata, dead Ulmus americana, Urtica dioica, Prunus
serotina, in bottom of small valley.
