Scinaia Hatei* Boergs., sp. nov.; Scinaiae articulatae Setch. proxima, quae tamen thaUo magis regulariter constricto, axi centrali conspicuo, utriculis latioribus et brevioribus a specie nostra distincta est. Frons roseo-rubra, cylindrica, circiter 9 cm. alta, 2-5 mrn. lata, identidem furcata et dichotomo-fastigiata, hie illic ad basim fur- cationis constricta. Rami infeme plus minus leviter attenuati. Axis centralis obscurus. Utriculi circiter 23 (x lati, 31 ¡x longi; cellulis epidermidis pyriformibus, circiter 13 [i latis 23 ¡a longis, coloratis. Cystocarpia oculo nudo visibilia, globoso-pyriformia, circiter 265 ¡a lata. India : Dwarka, in rock pools near low water mark, Boergesen *«qi. Okha Port, cast ashore, Boergesen 5484 (type). Karachi, W. J. S. Pullen (Herb. Kew.). The colour of the plant (Plate I. fig. 2) is deep rose. The tallest specimens collected reached a height of 9 cm. The cylindrical thallus is from 2 to 5 mm. thick and is repeatedly forked and generally but not always constricted at the joints (Fig. 3). The segments are A. th det. F. Bergesen. * Named in honour of Professor Vin'ayak N. Hate of Wilson College, Bombay, whose great interest in the algological investigation of India made it possible for me to go to India and collect during the winter 1927-28. iéì-v'v- /—/ 3 y 5 In the collection of algae from the Kew Herbarium a fine specimen of this species is present, collected at Karachi in December, 1859, f] by W. J. S. Pullen. Scinaia Hatei is most nearly related to S. articulata Setchell »o r (The Scinaia Assemblage, p. 109, plate xiii. figs. 39, 40). This species differs from our plant in the more regularly constricted thallus, the segments being usually a little narrowed near their upper ends, the axial strand being visible in dried specimens, and the utricles being broader and shorter.
