Description
Pileus 2.5-10 cm broad, hemispheric to convex to plano-convex, dry, matted felt-like to matted sublanose at first becoming appressed squamulose then with flattened plaque-like zones, a clay color to pale cinnamon brown (5D5 - 6D5), becoming dark brown to black when forming the plaque-like zones, sometimes with sterile appendiculate marginal veil remnants. Flesh white slowly and faintly with some orangish red (very fresh and young) before becoming black when exposed. Tubes adnexed, white at first, staining orangish red (very fresh and young) becoming black, then gray to dark gray to brown then black. Stipe 4-7 cm long, 1-1.5 cm broad, equal to narrowing downward, fibrous, dry, lanose and subreticulate, pale gray becoming orangish red (very fresh and young) then black, with interior whitish to pale gray, orangish red then black, with basal mycelium obscured by substrate.
