This plant grows abundantly all along the coast of Main**, forming contin-
uous patches, often of several yards extent, on boulders, etc., usually near
half tide. It is seldom mixed with other algae, but it varies considerably in
proportional* size and shape of stipe and ;*clava.” The usual form answers
to C. longipes, but the variations extend to typical C. gregarium, A. Br., on
the one hand, and C. cylindraceum, Foslie, on the other.
