7 8 y iv TtoNEw\bRK copyright reserved botanical gardei Phycotheca Boreali-Americana. Collins, Holden, and Setchell. 983. Pithophora varia wme n. sp. In quiet water, Minneapolis, Minnesota. MISS E. BUTLER. Individuals short, consisting of a sparingly branched frond; the branches secund or alternate, rarely opposite, often arising slightly below the cross wall. Little distinction between the main stem (width 73-103 mmm.) and the primary and secondary branches. The terminal cells are more slender (43-70 mmm.) and only rarely end in helicoids. The cell wall is quite thin, contents scanty. The resting akinetes, that arise either singly or two or three in a series, have* thick walls, especially end walls, and are either ovoid, cylindrical or somewhat irregular; they are terminal or intercalary and arise both in the main stem and in the branches, even in very short branches, which may consist of two akinetes only. The terminal akinetes are always more or less ovoid, the upper end more attenuate (length 150-213, width 64-69 mmm.) and arise either singly or in connection with ovoid or cylindrical akinetes next below them. The intercalary akinetes (length 70-240, breadth 60-112 mmm.) are either single or two or three together; the following combinations can occur: two ovoid; two cylindrical; one ovoid and one cylindrical; or. one ovoid with one cylindrical on each side.
