Plant mass caespitose-floccose, blue-green, becoming dark-colored; filaments, 8-10 mic.
in diameter, repeatedly branched; false branches erect-patent, flexuously curved;
sheaths membranaceous, thin, usually inflated at base of branches, hyaline or yellowish ;
trichomes 6-8 mic in diameter, cylindrical, blue-green ; cells equal to or longer than
the diameter; heterocysts 1-5 in number.

Plant mass thin, blue-green; filaments 28-50 mic. in diameter; sheaths folded into many
laminations; lamellae much dilated, dark brown (fuligineus) in thicker parts; trich-
omes 10-20 mic. in diameter, gray-green; cells 1.4-5 mic. long, shorter than broad;
heterocysts 12x16 mic., globose or oval, or subquadrate.
