DESCRIPTION: Thallus up to 6 (12) cm. in diameter, yellowish brown in
colour; mature thallus of irregular outline with a much convoluted surface
and hollow in the center. Interior of thallus with colourless dichotomously
and radiately branched filaments with progressively smaller cells toward
the surface. Outermost portion of thallus with club-shaped or rounded
cells in assimilating filaments, and occasional fascicles of colourless multi-
cellular hairs.

DESCRIPTION: Thallus dark reddish purple to purplish black, with
erect, wiry branches repeatedly and dichotomously branched. Branches
terete. Thallus 5-10 cm. high.

DESCRIPTION: Thallus erect, profusely branched, with terete branches
bearing numerous minute conical spines. Thalli from 2-6 cm. high, fre-
quently to 10 cm. in tidepools. Usually dark red to brownish black in
colour, but frequently greenish when in exposed tidepools.
