A rather coarse looping climber in stream depressions of
dense voods at 260 feet: old stem 1 inch thick* smooth and
glauoous green, the leaf bearing portion 2 inches thick;
leaves alternate» 1 foot apart» 10 feet long or more and ter-
minating into a hooked raohis again as long; pertiols proper
1 1/2 foot long» yellowish green» spiny, flattened especially
the upper side; leaflets recurred» submembranous» pleasing
green on both «idea; the shoulder of the petiole and glauoous
green sheath densely beset with flattened spines 1/2 to 1 1/2
inches long» and arranged in transveree rows; pistillate
inflorescence leaf opposed» usually several» the upper ones
in anthesis» the lower onee in fruit» ascending or suberect»
upon a short spiny stalk; bracts ? 10 inches long» fusiform»
m extenuated; into a 6 inch long point» the outer sheath
gray and splnesoent,the inner ones yellowish and smooth»
the (stalks) pedicels and flowers eimilar in color» and
eoTered with an oohraceous scurfy powder» persistently Ineluded
by the sheaths and numerously inhabited by small blaok ants»
the sheaths only bursting by the development of the fruit
and yet persistent; fruiting stalks green and smooth, nuts
fally - 1/2 inch in diameter» globose» green exoept the dark
brown persistent stigma and lighter brown bract marging;
