stem rigid, 3/4 inch thick, dark green, jointed every 7
inohes; leafy portion 2 Inches thick; leaves horizontal
and recurved, B feet long* rather olosely set; sheaths
composed of thick spinescent shoulder of the petiole base,
yellowish green; the peduncle (petiole) proper nearly 1
foot longt 1 l/E inch wide at the base, flattened,	.
spinescent on both sides-* those on the lower with b&ckwardly
hooked spines* the reohls of the leaf 1 y*rd long, kj^ked,
recurved; leaflets descending or pendant, pale or yellowish
green on both sides, dry parohment-OLlke, flat ©r curved
upon the lower side; infrutescence 1 yard long, ascend-
ingly recurved, in the young state enclosed in spinescent
sheath 1 foot long, pale green, end usually covered with
