McClatchie, Proc. Southern Calif. Acad., Vol. I, p. 358, 1893: a. On leaves of Phyllospadix growing on exposed shores, Carmel Bay,. Monterey, Monterey County, California, Jan. 12, 1899. W. A. SETCHELL AND R. E. GIBBS. b. On leaves of Phyllospadix growing on exposed shores, Fort Ross, Sonoma County, California, Dec., 1897. W. A. SETCHELL. This seems to be a perfectly distinct as well as abundant species on the Western Coast of the United States and along its whole extent. The specimens distributed are those of the smaller form occurring on exposed shores on Phyllospadix, those under (a) representing the stages where the membranous portion is developed, while those under (b) have little more developed than the prothalloid basal portion which is peculiar to this spe- cies.
