Very abundant all winter on Potamog- etón, etc., in swift water in Huron River, Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 1898. L. N. JOHNSON. This species, which is very widespread in the United States, although very variable in external form is however fairly readily recognized. The character- istic trichogyne is ovoid, but is generally distorted so as not to be readily distinguished from the lageniform trichogyne of the moniliforme group. The species differs from any of that section as well as from those of its own section in being completely dioecious. The older specimens are characterized by the cask-shaped verticils being much separated, while between them there has been developed a cylindrical growth of interverticillary filaments, as is shown in the various specimens distributed. The prothalloid and Chantransia growths of this species are readily ob- tained and studied, and the “ metamorphosis” was demonstrated by Dr. John- son in the case of the Chantransia distributed under (c).
