  • Description

    Pileus 7-17 cm broad, convex to plano-convex to plane, dry, tomentose when young, becoming matted tomentose to tomentose areolate with age, dark brown (6F8-8F7) when young, becoming slightly grayish brown with age, but still a dark brown. Flesh light yellow, bluing with exposure, eventually white, up to 2.5 cm thick, with mild odor and taste. Tubes depressed around stipe, up to 2 cm long, light yellowish green and soon blue with exposure, with pores a maroon to photobrown to oxblood red (9F8) when young, bruising blue, the maroon pigment soon dispersed and the pores appearing linoleum brown to mustard brown (5E7-6). Stipe 9-14 cm long, 1.5-3 cm broad, ±equal to subclavate, dry, glabrous to occasionally subpruinose, the latter a pale brown, otherwise maize yellow (4A6), rhubarb red to reddish brown at the base, apparently with white basal mycelium, with interior yellow, cyanescent, dark red in the base. Gregarious. Phenology of specimen: Basidiomata.
