Soinaia carnosa Harv.'3otaniska Hotise*'page 188. 1938. Lund.
1938, Alg. exs. Ceylon, no. 38. J. Agardh, Spec. Alg., vol. Ill,
p. 513. Setchell, The Scinaia assemblage p. 107, pi.11, figs. 25— 27.
—Ginnsnia carnosa Eutz. in Tab. Phycol., vol. XVI, p. 30, tab. 83.
A small specimen about 12 cm high is found in a collection
of Indian Algae presented to the British Museum (Nat. Hist.) by Prof.
Iyengar. The specimen has only a few constrictions. These also are
only found in one or two cases in a specimen of Harvey*s in my own
herbarium. When Setchell writes regarding the constrictions: nit
seems probable that the constriction is due to accident rather than
to a regular process of growth” I must point out that the same seems to
be the case in the specimens I have examined, as in most (all?) cases
where constrictions are found the filament seems to have been cut over
and new shoots with thin bases have been developed from the scars.
The anatomical building up of the thallus of the specimen
quite agrees with that of Harvey’s specimen, having in accordance with
Setchell's description and figures elongated palissade-like utricles
with thick cuticula.
