Distribution
Phycotheca Bore ali-Americana. Collins, Holden, and Setchell. 538. Rhodoglossum polycarpum (Harv.) J. Ag.? J. G. Agardh, Sp. Alg., "Vol. Ill, p. 186, 1876; Florideernes Morpho- logi, PI. XI, figs. 1-3,1879 ; Till Alg. Syst., part 3, p. 26,1884. Iridea polycarpa De Toni, Sylloge Algarum, Yol. IV, p. 190,1897. In great abundance upon rocks between tide marks, Carmel Bav, Monterey County, California, Dec. 31, 1896. W. A. SETCHELL and C. P. NOTT. This plant is a true Rhodoglossum, a genus differing sufficiently from Iridea to be retained separate. As to the species, forms of the Californian plant answer well either to B. polycarpum or to R. lalissimum. The only accessible specimen is one in Herb. Farlow, collected by Yon Mueller, distributed by Agardh, and labelled by him ? R. latissimum ?? It is only a fragment, but agrees well with our plant in color, texture, size of cystocarps, etc. Our plant is very variable in size and habit, possesing a distinct stipe, lanceolate, broader or narrower, simple or proliferating blade, and is frequently mistaken when in tetrasponc condition for cystocarpic Grateloupia Gutleriae. It reaches a length of 75 cm. with a breath of 15 cm. It grows in some abundance along the coast from Carmel Bay in Monterey County to Puget Sound. NFW YORK BOTANICAL RARDFN 02189257
