Rhodoohorton Thuretii var. agama (Rosenv.) Drew, comb.nor.
Univ.Calif.Pubi.Bot.14:171.4 P 1928.
Plants epiphytic; filaments reaching a length of 4-5 mm.;
base composed of creeping filaments; erect filaments branched;
branches alternate and secund, usually ending in hair-like
prolongations; cells cylindrical, 10.0-11.0 p. diam. and from
3-5 times as long; chromatophore parietal with a single
pyrenoid; monosporangia usually in pairs, one terminal and
one lateral on one-oelled branchlets; branchlets very rarely
branched, in short secund series of 2-3 on the adaxlal side
of the base of the branches; monosporangia 10.0-11.0 jl diam.
and 17.0-22.0 jx long; tetrasporangia subglobular, 21.0-22.0 Ji
diam. and 25.0-26.0 p long; sexual reproduction unknown.
On ZoBtera sp. San Pedro, California. January. Collected
by Mrs. E. D. Johnson. Also reported from Denmark.
Chantransia Thuretii var. agama Hosenvinge, Mar. Alg.
Den.,pt. 1, 1909, p.102, figs.32,33; in company with other
algae in Collins, Holden and setohell, phyo.Bor. Amer.(?csioc.)
nos. 761, 762.
The material from California agrees very well with Rosenvinge*s
description of Chantransia Thuretii var. agama but whereas most
of the branches of the material distributed in phyo.Bor.Amer.,
nos.781 and 782, terminate in hair-like prolongations, Rosenvinge
(op.oit.) says, ** sometimes the branches taper into very thin hair-
like threads, consisting of very thin cells." Such a minor point,
however, would not justify its separation into a new variety
especially sinoe there is no evidence that hair-like prolongations
of the branches are constant in character. Unlike Rosenvinge*s
material, that from California has monosporangia only.
Collins (1906) lists Aorochaetium Sagraeanum (Mont.) Bomet
from southern California. When describing this species Bornet
(1904, p.21) says that among other material he used some from
California, collected by Mrs. H. D. Johnson and sent to him by
Collins, as a basis for his account of the species. This material
was growing on Ruppia maritima and so it seems possible that
Bomet had some of the material described here as Rhodochorton
Thuretii var. agama. This possibility was taken into consideration
when identifying the Californian specimens and the materials in
Collins, Holden and Setohell, phyo.Bor.Amer.(Exsloo.), nos. 39 and
2181. both identified as Aorochaetium Sagraeanum, was compared with
it. The material in the former collection is sterile but neither
specimen agrees well with the material growing on Zostera, which
is undoubtedly very much closer to Rosenvinge?s plant, chantransia
Thuretii var. agama, than to the material in either of these collect-
ions of A. Sagraeanum.
