Josephine E. Tilden. American Algae.
319. Laurencia grevilleana Hary. Tr. R. I. Acad. 22:545. Phyc. Austr. 1:
pi 15. 1858.
Holdfast disc-shaped; frond 1-5 dm. in length, dark purple, alternately de-
compound-pinnatifid; branching distichous throughout; main stem 2-5
mm. wide, thickened at base, becoming quite flat in upper portions;
ultimate pinnules denticulate, acuminate; fronds bearing tetragonidia
much narrower but otherwise similar; tetragonidia contained in two rows
in ultimate linear-lanceolate, acuminate pinnules; cystocarpic fronds nar-
row like the latter, but of different aspect for the reason that cystocarps
take the place of many of the.ultimate pinnules; cystocarps urn-shaped.
Attached to white fir log. Cast up on beach.
North Bay, San Juan island, Washington.
J. E. T. 28 My, 1898.
The plant agrees with Harvey?s, description in main characteristics of ster-
ile frond; fruiting specimens werenot seen by him. It is unlike all Lauren-
cias described, so far as I know, in having the ultimate pinnules acumin-
ate instead of obtuse. If not Harvey?s plant, it is at least a near relative.
