This alga forms a continuous thin, red crust of about 220^
thick. The cells in the vertical rows are about 4-5^ broad and
1-1.5 times as long as broad. The sporangia are quite variable in
shape, varying from ovoid, obovate to nearly cylindrical. They
attain a length of 25/x and a breadth of 13^ and are cruciately
divided, the dividing walls being always obliquely placed.
HAB. Common on roundish pebbles, stones, rocks, etc. in the
upper litoral belt where most, other algae are not able to grow.
Tungshan I., in September (Tseng 2132).
DISTR. Probably cosmopolitan.
