The fleshy thallus arises from a discoid holdfast. It is com-
pressed in the basal part and cylindrical upwards. The main axis is
percurrent, simple and gives rise laterally to widely patent, horizontal
branches vhich are again branched irregularly. Branches of all
order do not attenuate at base but do so gradually upwards. The
cortical cells of the assimilatory filaments are mostly barrel-shaped
being about 14-20/* broad and 30-40/1 long (cf. fig. 1, a). The
specimens examined are all carpogonial; the present species is,
therefore, dioecious as Okamura has pointed out. The procarp

consists of three cells, the lowest one of which is often wedge-shaped;
it is formed as a lateral branch of the peripheral filament near
its base (cf. fig. i, b). The medullary filaments are 16-30­x in
diam.

Our plant attains a height of 17 cm. and a breadth of 8 mm. in
the broad, flattened lower portion. It has a very gelatinous and
slimy thallus, being dull reddish purple in the living state, fading to a
slightly brownish purple color when dried.
HAB. On coral chips, in the lower litoral belt, Kuan-nan, Hai-
nan, in April (Tseng 7^9).
