Helminthocladia australis Harv. Bull. Fan Mem. Inst. Biol. 7: 234, fig. 1. Mr. 1937 ^ if 25. Helminthocladia australis Harv. (Fig. 1) Phyc. Austr. vol. 5 (1863) pi. 272; J. Agardh, Epicr. syst. Florid. (1876) p. 506; Ibid., Till Alg. Syst. XI (1891) p. 39; Okamura, Icon. Jap. Alg. vol. 4, no. 2 (1916) p. 21, pi. 156, pi. 157, figs. 7-21 (p.p.)', Narita, Enum. Sp. Nemal. et Helminth. Jap. (1918) p. 193; Borgesen, Ind. Rhodophyc. (1931) p. 7. H. purpurea (non Harv ) Narita. I.e., p. 193. (fide Okamura). The fleshy thallus arises from a discoid holdfast. It is com- pressed in the basal part and cylindrical upwards. The main axis is percurrent, simple and gives rise laterally to widely patent, horizontal branches vhich are again branched irregularly. Branches of all order do not attenuate at base but do so gradually upwards. The cortical cells of the assimilatory filaments are mostly barrel-shaped being about 14-20/* broad and 30-40/1 long (cf. fig. 1, a). The specimens examined are all carpogonial; the present species is, therefore, dioecious as Okamura has pointed out. The procarp C. K. TSENG: ON MARINE ALGAE NEW TO CHINA II 235 consists of three cells, the lowest one of which is often wedge-shaped; it is formed as a lateral branch of the peripheral filament near its base (cf. fig. i, b). The medullary filaments are 16-30x in diam. 7*f Fig. 1. Helminthocladia australis Harv. x 200. (a) Assimilating filaments. (b) Assimilating filaments and a carpogonial branch. (c) Medullary filament. Our plant attains a height of 17 cm. and a breadth of 8 mm. in the broad, flattened lower portion. It has a very gelatinous and slimy thallus, being dull reddish purple in the living state, fading to a slightly brownish purple color when dried. HAB.
