The specimens distributed are labelled C. affinis rather than C.
canaliculatus J. Ag., because the cystocarps project upon both surfaces
oi^P^bnd. There are certainly forms of Chondrus upon the Qali-
fornia coast of which this is not true, and there seems to be some pr$6-
ability that there are two species of Chondrus represented.
