Josephine E. Tilden. American Algae.

156. Zyg’nema chalybeospermum Hansg. Hedwigia. 257. 1888.

Filaments forming a deep green mass strongly impregnated with lime;
vegetative cells 30-40 mik. in diameter, 1—2 times as long as broad;
fructiferous cells shorter, inflated, about 48—60 mik. in diameter;
zygotes lenticular, 48 mik. in diameter in circular view, nearly filling
cell, with smooth membrane which when mature gives a tinge of blue
to the dark green cell contents (atrovirens to atro-cyaneus); conjuga-
tion scalariform.

In hole below reservoir.

Near Port Collins, Colorado.

Coll. J. H. Cowen, 4 J1 1896.

Although the diameter of the vegetative cells and of the spores in the above
plant is somewhat greater than in the type, the presence of lime, the relative
dimensions, and the color of the zygote membrane in particular make it seem
advisable to place it under this species.
