SPIROGYRA ELONGATA, WOOD - Fresh-water Algae of the United States

page 18, February 1872 (Smithsonian contribution to knowledge,
241).

Sp. articulis vegetativis diametro 7-20 plo longioribus; artioulis
sporiferis rnulto brevioribus, valde tumidis; cytiodermate utro-
que fine protenso et repllcato; fuscia unica, laxissime spirali;
anfraotibus plerumoque 7; sporis elliptiois, diametro 1-2& plo
longioribus*

Diam.-Spor. 8/7500" S .00106". Artio. vegetat. 4/7500" = .0005".

Syn.-Rhynchonemaelongatum, WOOD, Prodromus, Proc. Amer. Philos. So©.
1869, p. 137.

Hab.-In aquis limpidis, prope Philadelphia.

Sterile joints 7-20 times longer than broad; fertile joints
muoh shorter, greatly swollen; oell wall at each end produced
or folded in; chlorophyl filament 1, spiral lax; turns mostly
7; spores elliptical, 2-2& times longer than broad.

REMARKS.- I found this species about the middle of March, fruiting
in a little pool near Chelten Hills, six or eight miles north
of the city. It did not form a distinct stratum by itself, but
was floating, intermingled with great numbers of other filamen-
tous algae, such as fragillariioe, zygnemoe, &o. It seems to
be most closely allied to the European R. minimum; it however
not only attains a somewhat larger size but also differs from
that plant in the proportionate length of the sterile cells,
in the number of the turns of the chlorophyl spiral in the cell,
and in the proportionate length and breadth of the spore.

Fig. 1, pi. 14, represents portions of sterile filaments mag-
nified 450 diameters; 1 a, a part of a fertile filament, mag-
nified 450 diameters.
