  • Collector(s)

    C. F. Austin, Sep 1867

  • Location

United States of America. New Jersey. Along the railroad ½ mi. S of Closter Station.

  • Habitat

    On wet sandy ground.

  • Description

Allied to B. vinealis. Stems very short. Leaves widely spreading, linear or oblong-lanceolate, strongly caniculate, carinate by the very stout costa (which curves at the apex or is slightly excurrent), plane on the margins (or one or both of them slightly recurved below the middle), apex acutish with a minute subpellucid apiculus, minutely papillose-entire (or minutely crenulate) on the margins, somewhat narrow at the base. Areolation granulose, except at the base where it is considerably elongated and hyaline. Cellules very irregular and echlorophyllous. About the size and appearance of sterile Weissia viridula. Leaves when moist widely spreading, but somewhat irregularly - so when dry subcrisped. Of a yellowish-green color. The leaves are too narrow, apex not sufficiently obtuse, margins too nearly plane, etc. for Desmatodon arenaceus, otherwise much like it. Shape of leaf much as in Gymnostomum rupestre. Areolation much longer than in Barbula convoluta...[more] - C. F. Austin.
