CYLINDROCYSTIS CYLINDROSPORA

Francis Drouet and William A. Daily

A desmid which is common in pools and on wet substrata in the Mari-
time Provinces and indeed throughout the world has long been passing under
names untenable under the pressnt international rules of nomenclature. The
following transfer seems appropriate:

Cylindrocystis cylindrospora (Bréb.), comb. nov. Palmella, cylin-
drospora Brébisson in Bréb. and Godey, Mém. Soc. Acad. Sci. Arte
and Belles-Lettres Falaise 1835: 256 (1836). Cylindrocystis Brebisso-
nii Meneghini, Cenni sulla Organogr. e Fisiol. delle Alghe, p. 5
(1838) ; Menegh. in Desmazières, PI. Crypt. France, ed. ii., no. 914
(1838). Palmogloea Brebissonii Kirtzing, Tab. Phyc. 1: 19 (1846). P.
Meneghina Kützing, loc. cit. (1846). Penium Brebissonii Ralfs, Brit.
Desmiidiæ., p. 153 (1848).

The type specimen, labeled “Cylindrocystis Brebissonii Menegh. Falaise,
ex herb. Lenormand” is in the Meneghini herbarium at the Istituto Botanico
at Florence. We are indebted to Dr. Rodolpho Pichi-Sermolli of that institu-
tion for the opportunity of seeing this material on loan.
