Cell of moderate size, about one half longer than
broad, truncate-elliptical, semicell apices depressed, the
sides curved, the basal angles rounded sinus linear;
wall moderately heavy, sparsely and finely punctulate, the
faces markedly internally thickened in a refractive
lenticular area about two fifths oi the diameter of the

7/ille (1924) figures from the Antarctic; a smaller form
with slightly thickened sides, without distinctive name.

The var. subtumidum of Eaciborski (1889) is less thick-
ened, has rounded poles and coarser punctulation.

var. nov.—Cellulae mediocres, aimidio longiores cm am
latiores, trmicatae, ellipticae; semicellulis apice
depressis, lateribus curvatis, angulis basalibus rotund-
atis; sinu lineari; membrana modice crassa, sparse et
minute punctulata; faciebus intus valde cum lente
refractivo duas quintas semicellulae diametiente ornatus.
