  • Georeferencing Method

BioGeomancer, Guide to Best Practices for Georefer. Assumed the somewhat illegible locality description (appears to be "prope Piapabusu") to be the city of Piaçabuçu. Piaçabuçu exists as a city and município; because of the age of this collection georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of the present day city. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of the city of Piaçabuçu in Alagoas, Brazil; taking into account the added uncertainty of the word "prope" (near) in the locality description. Used Google Maps - Earth and Map Views to locate the city of Piaçabuçu. Used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the city (using visual evidence to determine). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to approximate the linear extent of Piaçabuçu by measuring from the selected coordinates to the approximate geographic center of the nearest named place, Penedinho (at: -10.391388, -36.488127), then halving this distance (3.685 km). Chose the larger of 2 km or 200% of the linear extent as the final linear extent in accordance with the Biogeomancer Guide to Best Practices for Georeferencing, "Near a Feature" method. Input coordinate source (locality description), coordinates, coordinate precision (.00001 degrees). datum (WGS84), linear extent (7370.0 m), and measurement error (5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Biogeomancer Guide to Best Practices for Georeferencing, Near a Feature).
