PLANTS OF MASSACHUSETTS
Andropogon gerardii Vitman POACEAE
Herbs to 3ft tall, usually less, rare, forming a solid clone about 7ft across, much larger than when I saw it at this exact spot 2 years earlier. This clone had expanded even more by 9/2007, but the stems tend to be very short for this species because the site is so dry (summer 2005 was very dry & summer 2007 was even drier). Growing along the edge of a trail in a shrubby meadow at the upper-edge of a large powerline right-of-way & lower margin of an oak-hickory savanna, on a moderate north-facing slope, in shallow, dry, rocky loam over metamorphic rock (Rock outcrop-Hollis complex, 3-35% slopes; loamy, mixed, active, mesic Lithic Dystrudepts). Growing with Achillea millefolium, Antennaria sp., Betula populifolia, Carex sp., Carya glabra, Danthonia sp., Deschampsia flexuosa, Fragaria virginica, Helianthemum bicknellii, Helianthus divaricatus, Lespedeza capitata, Linaria vulgaris. Polytrichum sp., Populus tremuloides, Quercus rubra, Rhus typhina, Rosa sp., Rubus flagellaris (?), Schizachyrium scoparium, Smilacina racemosa, Solidago bicolor, S. nemoralis & Vaccinium pallidum. Horn Pond Mountain, Wobum, Middlesex Co. Elev. about 250ft. 42° 27' 42.0"N, 71° 09' 25.9"W. UTM 19 322639E, 4703293N (NAD83/WGS84).
