Chaparral and low-statured woodland dominated by Quercus kelloggii, Q. chrysolepis, Scunbucus mexicana, Rhamnus tomentella cuspidata, elc\ on northwesterly slope in decomposed granite. Arborescent spreading shrub ca 4-5 m high, locally common above and below the road; leaves green above, slightly duller beneath; acorns broad and bulbous with a small involucre, on current season's twigs; acorn shell glabrous inside.
