Road and Tater Hill Road (SSR 1308, SSR 1306). Steep
slope above roadcut. Headwaters of Sharp Creek. About
5.3 miles due northwest of Boone. Elevation 3900-4000
feet. Appalachian Mountains; large vertical exposed
outcrops, gneissic rocks, perhaps with calcium.
Dry-mesic oak/hickory forest above mesic cove forest
below. Abundant large lichen attached to rock face at
center of roughly circular thallus, generally 10-20 cm in
diameter; upper surface olive-green when wet to tan-gre>
when dry and black beneath.
