Stratum about 1 mm. thick; filaments 14-16 p.
diam. , repeatedly false branched under the hetero-
cysts; trichomes 8-11 p diam.; cells in the main
body of the filament cylindrical, not constricted,
equidiametric, those in the apical regions one-
third to two-thirds as long as broad, constricted
at the cross-walls, contents pale blue-green,,
slightly yellowish in age, finely granular; sheath
smooth, homogeneous, close-fitting and closed at
the ends, hyaline.

Associated with other Myxophvceae on moist
rock in ravine, Kushan, near Foochow, China. Type,
Chung, no. A327a, in the Parlow Herbarium, Harvard
University, Cambridge, Mass.

This species of Tolypothrix has close affinities
with T. limbata and T. distorta. It differs from the
former in having a firm, thinner, smooth sheath, and
from the latter in being shorter and in having a
greater diameter.
