  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Could not determine the precise location of the place called "Marambaia"; therefore georeferenced to 7 km (average of 6 and 8) along the sequence of major roads connecting Itacaré to Serra Grande, BA-654 and BA-001, in Mun. Itacaré, Bahia. Using a paper map of the area ("Salvador" [map]. 1:1,000,000. In: Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia. Departamento de Cartografia (Firm). International Chart Of The World On The Millionth Scale: Brazil. Rio de Janeiro: 1972. page 32.), found the general location of the town of Serra Grande. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the seat of Itacaré, and the roads connecting it to the town of Serra Grande, BA-654 and BA-001. Beginning at the point along BA-654 closest to the approximate geographic center of the city of Itacaré (-14.2798783 -38.9951697), used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure approximately 5.7 km along BA-654 (SW) and then 1.3 km along BA-001 (S), for a total distance of 7 km (7.00017 km) towards Serra Grande. Using Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs, found coordinates for the offset. Using Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) again, estimated the linear extent of the starting location of the offset, the city of Itacaré, by measuring from the chosen starting coordinates near the center of the city to the farthest extent of the city. Input coordinates, linear extent (1.13611 km), measurement error (0.0005 km), and distance precision (1 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: offset along a path). an additional 1 km was added to the uncertainty output from the MaNIS calculator to account for the 1 km difference between the distance ranges provided on the label and the average distance used for measuring the offset.
