Dry, deciduous forest; Betula lenta, Quercus velutina, Quercus rubra, Carya tomentosa, Acer rubrum and Acer saccharum dominant.

Description
Herbs forming small clumps; spikes purple or maroon, the bracts lighter toward the margins, but not white; styles long-exserted, white; growing directly out of the leaf litter, plants widespread and abundant in this forest. Phenology of specimen: Fertile.
