    "Chapada" on gentle slope of side of low plateau. This spot slightly cut-over and grazed. Shrubs and low trees with 30% cover; scattered grasses and herbs. Soil covered with pebbles and small rocks.

Main vegetation types of regions (l) "chapada*, decid-
uous to evergreen xaromorphic tree woodland ("cerra-
dao") on tops & sides of sandstone plateaus & some
low flat land; (2) •tabuleiro*, deciduous lov-tree
woodland (another type of "oerradao*) on upper parts
of rolling terrain; (3)%ftt**» closed, deciduous to
evergreen forest, in galleries; (¿) "caatlnga”, open
deciduous forest on lover parts of rolling terrain;
(5)Harjao*, scattered deciduous forest-type trees
on lew flat land; (6) "cecal”, dense babagu palm
groves on Ffcrnaiba River terrace ft som brook val-
1 leys* Dry season £-5 months with almost no rain;
brooks intermittent. Annual fires & cattle grazing
in all areas* Soma spots with dense secondary cha-
pada scrub ("carrasco"); much tabuleiro cleared to
fozm grassy pasture; snch msta, caatinga ft varjao
in shifting cultivation.
