  • Georeferencing Method

BioGeomancer, Guide to Best Practices for Georefer. Georeferenced to the area of Rio Orinoco directly downstream from of the mouth of Rio Atabapo, approximately 4 km northward of the mouth of Rio Atabapo, in San Fernando de Atabapo, Amazonas, Venezuela. Used Google Maps - Earth View to locate Río Atabapo, a tributary of Rio Orinoco/Rio Guaviare. Used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the confluence of Río Orinoco and Rio Guaviare (which leads immediately to the mouth of Río Atabapo), directly north of the mouth of Río Atabapo (confluence of Río Atabapo and Rio Guaviare), on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the approximate geographic center of the mouth of Rio Atabapo. Input coordinates, coordinate precision (.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), linear extent (3800.0 m), and measurement error (5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Mouth or headwaters of a river, confluence of waterways, trailhead).
