Plants forming dark, loose, spongy layers
3-4 mm. thick; filaments much branched, the
branches being of 3-5 orders, arising on all
sides at irregular intervals, usually a few in
e group, and widely divaricate; main filaments
up to 160 p. diam., with a more or less irregular
outline; branches of different orders reduced. In
size; cells aeruginous, homogeneous, 10-15 ^ diam.,
in more or less complex groups arranged in fairly
well defined layers perpendicular to the long axis;
heterocysts few and poorly defined; hormogoniferous
branches very short and blunt, closely congested;
cell walls at first hyaline, becoming dark-brown
in age,thin and close fitting.

Forming spongy layers on moist soil and rocks.
Kuliang, near Foochow, Chine. Chung, nos. A280,
A296, A308, 0;17, A396. Type, no. A280, in the
Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University, Cambridge,
Mass.

The species is similar to Stigonema	mamillosa,
(Lyngb.) Ag. The plants are more robust,	the fila-
ments are much larger, and the grou is of	cells more
complex than in that species.
