Univ.Calif.Publ.Bot.l4îl0.pl.1. f.9* 2? S 192?. Plants associated into a very dense , compact stratum of indefinite expanse, 1-1.4 mm. thick; filaments sparsely branched, straight, or slightly sinuous, 6-7 V diam. , standing perpendicular uo the substratum and parallel with each other, form- ing a palisade layer, loosely agglutinated; branches strict; heterocvsts sparse and inconspicuous; cells sub spherical to" compressed, uniseriate, 3.5-^.5 p. diam"., aeruginous; cell walls hyaline, homogeneous; hormogonia apical, 7-10 cells long. Forming a deep blue-green layer on eartn. Kushan, near Foochow, China. Type, Chung, no. A42C, in the Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. The individual filaments of this species of Stigonema very closely resemble those of certain forms of S. hormoides. It also resembles the im- perfectly described Sirosiphon velutinus Kuetz. Its habit of growth is unique for the genus, the filaments being perpendicular to the substratum,^ parallel with each other, and very closely associat- ed, forming a continuous agglutinated stratum. The hormogonia are at the free ends of the xilaments on the surface of the stratum. 00945477
