Frondibus pulvinulos orbiculares, 1-2 mm. diam.,
superficie superiore convexa; parte prostrata filamentis
arete adhaerantibus, regulariter radiantibus composita;
filamentis erect is dense stipatis, simplicibus, cellulis
cylindricis, 5-7 ji diam. ; pilis veris sparsis, per frondem
promiscue distributis, basim meristematicis, vaginatis, 400-

"ascocystis " in filamentis prostratis sessilibus, cylindricis,
apice leviter distentis, 45-55 ji longis, 8-12 p. latis, nunc
in fronde tota sparsis nunc in gregibus isolatis; zoosporangi is
ignotis; gametangiis in filamentis basalibus sessilibus, cylin-
dricis, 60-80 ji longis, 6-8 y. latis, per transformationem quis-

Growing on Laminaria ephemera Setchell. Port Renfrew,
Vancouver Island, ITeah Bay, Puget Sound, (Tacoma) and central
California (Carmel Bay). Type, Gardner, no. 2910 (Herb. Univ.
Calif., no. 207013), Carmel Bay, California, May.

Thi3 small epiphyte seems to be restricted in it3 habitat
to the above named host. The only known localities in which the
host has been observed are those mentioned above. The material
from each locality is richly infested by this epiphyte. The
host, richly infested, was distributed by Miss Josephine Tilden
in her American Algae (Exsicc.), no. 609, under Renfrewia parvula
Griggs.

Tt seems very closely related to Myrionema foecundum f.
simplicissimura. The differences are in the larger measurements
of all of the parts, the presence of numerous, larger, so-called
ascocysts, occurring in groups (see plate 32, figure 7), or
scattered among the gametangia, in the presence of well develop-
ed hairs, and in the more convex upper surface of the mass of
erect filaments.

9. Myrionema foecundum f. majus S. and G.

Fronds forming circular cushions, 1-2 mm. diam. with convex
upper surface; prostrate portion composed of closely adhering, regu-
larly radiating filaments; erect filaments densely crowded, unbranched;
cells cylindrical, 5-7/a diam.; true hairs sparse, distributed promiscu-
ously over the frond, meristem at the base, surrounded by a sheath,
400-500/* long, cells 6/a diam., 5-8 times as long as the diameter at
the apices; “ascocysts” sessile on the prostrate filaments, cylindrical,
slightly larger at the distal end, 45—55/x long, 8-12/a diam., scattered
sparsely over the frond, occasionally in groups; zoosporangia un-
known ; gametangia sessile on the basal filaments, cylindrical, 60-80/1
long, 6-8/a diam., arising by transformation of all of each erect
filament, cross-walls horizontal or oblique.

Growing on Laminaria ephemera Setchell. Port Renfrew, Van-
couver Island, Neah Bay, Puget Sound and central California (Carmel
Bay).
