Distribution
Sargassum fonanonense Setchell et Gardner, sp. nov. Fig. 33, 1, 2. Frondibus 1.5-2.5 dm. altis, per radices solidas, parenchymaticas, discoideas affixis, monoicis; stipitibus 0.5-1.0 cm. longis, teretibus, levibus, ramos quoquever- Riim emittentibus; ramis ramulis secundariis numerosis, curtis, subdistichis, fructif- eris indutis; rhachidibus ramorum primariorum leviter complanatis, iis ramulorum secundariorum teretis; foliis anguste ellipticis, coriaceis, 1.5-2.5 cm. longis, costis medialibus inconspicuis, apice fere evanescentibus, marginibus seriebus rigidis dentium triangularum duabus ad laminas perpendiculariter positis ornatis, cryptostomatibus promiscue dispersis, conspicuis; vesiculis ignotis; receptaculis e axillis rhachidibus proxime positis, in basibus foliorum recurvatorum affixis, profuse ramosis, plus minusve tuberculatis et dentibus curtis obtusisque dense ornatis, capitula densa sphaerica formantibus. Samoan name: Limu Tala (improperly Limu Kala). No. 1290, in small pools, filled by spray and well above high-water mark, “iron- bound coast” at Fonanono, beyond Tafuna (July 21, 1920). This species, with the double row of teeth on the margin, seems close to several species with similar leaves, but in details it is quite different. Siitupe says that it is eaten. No. 1290 belongs to the Fruticulosae and seems to belong nearest to S. tele- phifolium (Turn.) J. Ag. and to S. densifolium Zan., but differs from both in leaf and inflorescence.
