  Árbol siempre verde de 20 pies de alto y 6 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Posee tronco erecto, hojas verde oscuro lustrosas, flores blancuzcas solitarias en forma de embudo y frutos anaranjados carnosos redondos. En la antigüedad los tallos se utilizaban como garrochas. Crece naturalmente en los bosques húmedos densamente sombreados de Puerto Rico y la Isla de Vieques. Está distribuido en La Española, Antillas Menores y Surinam. Evergreen tree of twenty feet of height and six inches of diameter in the trunk. It has a straight trunk, green dark bright leaves, and whitish solitary funnel shaped flowers, and orange fleshy round fruits. In the past, the stems were used like garrotes. It grows naturally in the densely shaded humid forests of Puerto Rico and Vieques. It is dispersed in Hispaniola and the Lesser Antilles.
