  Árbol pequeño siempre verde de hojas grandes coriáceas, venas melastómicas, borde dentado; flores blancas en racimos y frutos en bayas rojas. Esta planta se ha empleado como astringente para estimular la cicatrización de heridas y hemorragias de las encías y boca. En infusión se ha usado como expectorante y para controlar las hemorragias internas. Crece silvestre en la Sierra de Luquillo y Cordillera Central en Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas Mayores, Menores, América Central y del Sur. Small evergreen tree with large leathery dented venous leaves, mallets of white flowers, and fruits in red berries that soon turn blue or black. It has been used like an astringent to stimulate the healing of wounds and control hemorrhages of the gums and the mouth. In an infusion, it has been used like expectorant and to control internal hemorrhages. In Puerto Rico, it grows wild in the Mountain range of Luquillo and the Central Mountain range. It is distributed naturally in the mountains of the Greater and Smaller Antilles, Center and North of the South America.
