  Arbusto de 5 a 10 pies de alto y 3 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Posee eje erecto de copa rala con ramas espinosas casi horizontales, hojas caedizas en forma de cuchara, flores blancas fragrantes y bayas redondas de color blanco al madurar que pueden ser comestibles. Los frutos verdes se han empleado contra las diarreas. En la antigüedad era usado como árbol de Navidad. De las bayas se ha obtenido un tinte azul. Crece en espesuras, bosques abiertos secos, costeros, zona caliza y base de las montañas de Puerto Rico y las Islas de Mona, Icacos y Vieques. Está distribuido en las Antillas, Florida, México, América Central, Colombia y Venezuela. Shrub of five to 10 feet of height and 3 inches of diameter in the trunk. It has a straight axis, thin canopy with almost horizontal thorny branches, deciduous spoon shaped leaves, white fragrant flowers, and white round berries that ripe are edible. Green fruits have been used against diarrheas. In the past, it was used like Christmas tree. Of the berries, a blue dye is obtained. It grows in the dry coastal thicknesses, open forests, calcareous zone and at thebase of mountains of Puerto Rico and the Islands of Mona, Icacos, and Vieques. It is distributed in the Antilles, Florida, Mexico, Central América, Colombia and Venezuela.
