    Species Description - Deep-rooted, 1–few-stemmed perennial to 6 dm, armed throughout with stiff hairs 3–6 mm, these least abundant on the lvs; lvs long- petioled, subrotund in outline, deeply 3–5-lobed and often again cleft; cymes few-fld; cal of staminate fls salverform, the limb 14–25 mm wide; stamens 10, unequal; fr prismatic; seeds subcylindric, 6–8 mm; 2n=36. Dry, sandy soil, chiefly on the coastal plain; se. Va. to Fla. and Tex. June, July. (Jatropha s.)
